akua funk profile

At the Funk Parade Day Fair, CapitalBop presents three leading bands from D.C., plus a DJ spinning between sets. The courtyard outside the historic MA Winter Building will be filled with art, vendors and a pop-up bar. All of the day’s festive music demands dancing, with each performer drawing a personal connection between D.C.’s musical lineage and the greater African diaspora. It all comes together to create what we know today as FUNK. And…it’s FREE.

The JoGo Project makes a dynamic blend of go-go and jazz. Akua Allrichsounds like Roberta Flack by way of Georgia Anne Muldrow with a kick of Miriam Makeba. Cheick Hamala Diabate plays and sings the music of Mali, showcasing its rich, culture-crossing rhythms.
